Things people get wrong

A partner who is not coming with you does not lower your score. If your spouse or common-law partner stays behind, you are scored on the single-applicant grid, which is worth 30 to 40 more points in the core factors alone.

Your weakest language ability decides your skill-transferability points. A CLB 9 in reading does nothing for those points if your speaking is a 6. Retaking one test to lift a single weak band is often the cheapest points on the board.

A job offer no longer adds points. IRCC removed arranged-employment points on 25 March 2025. Any calculator still awarding 50 or 200 points for a job offer is out of date.
